Dramatic SFB: Is this an error?

Nope. Those positions put the defender inside the rings, and the 
attacker outside the rings. The Gas Giant is not between them, but the 
attacker is in a position to put it between them if he is fast. But 
since the defenders have the inside track, they are likely to be able to 
stay with the attacker. Since the rings are between them, it will slow 
down anyone wishing to transit closer or further away from the planet 
(which the attacker must do in order to get at least one more probe module.)
