"Warp footprints say it's a dreadnaught, a pair of
war cruisers, and a pair of destroyers."

"Report it to the Jordan." The commander replied while turning to the
Comms officer. "Begin sounding recall for personell from the cruisers
on-board. Warm up the Storm Generators."

It took nearly 15 minutes to get everyone in their proper place. Not
bad, for the attacking force was detected not but 80 light-seconds out.
The Klingons sure took their time in the approach. By the time the Vudar
knew the Klingon's escorts were an AD5 and an FWE, the cruisers Jordan,
Tirzah, and Philistia had warmed up thier weapons and they were
beginning to pull warp 1.8. The Klingons were beginning to launch their
fighter squadron and spread out for the attack plan.

"Prepare for a close-range engagement, captain." The commander of the
base station had command of the group while the force was in the
immediate environs of the station. Technically the Jordan warranted a
Rear-Admiral's slot, since she was the largest ship class the Vudar
could produce. However, with the guns mounted on the station it was the
best doctrine to coordinate through her. However, defense of Vudar
stations tend to very quickly devolve into independant commands because
of everyone's dependence on subspace and the Vudar's abilities to remove
subspace from the equation.

"Overload Ion Cannons." The captain of the Jordan commanded the group.
"Launch PFs. Make course for a close-approach with the base in
one-point-five minutes heading three-five-zero. And stay out of arc of
the directional waves."

The PFs disconnected from their linkages with a sharp release that
vibrated through the fabric of the ships. A total of four fast patrol
ships disengaged from the Tirzah and Philistia. The Vudar force made for
a sharp turn to starboard that took them closer to the base and circled
around again in order to arrive at the base the same time that the
Klingons were projected to open fire.

The area began churning with random ionic discharges as the base began
dumping power into the subspace matrix. Very quickly, communication was
useless and firing solutions fuzzed out as a beauty of an ion storm
gripped the area. The Klingon attempts to lock onto the station were
further hampered by it's sudden release of fire control and ramping up
of personal ECM. The Vudar ships kept their fire control but also
attempted to further the woes of the Klingon fire control computers. The
Klingon force pushed past 1.6 million miles from the base with the scout
and carrier in the rear and the fighters in the middle.

"Turn on the Vudar Tourist Association. Full Power." The station
commander said with a smile. The facing Ion Storm Generator emitted a
deep pulse of energy that caused the ion storm to align itself into a
short series of harmonic frequencies. The power built very quickly and
then began to broaden out in a 60-degree arc that bracketed the Klingon
force very nicely. When it smashed into the entire Klingon fleet, half
of the fighters were crippled and everyone's shields were coruscent with
radiant light. Shortly thereafter, another of the base's systems came
into view. Sensing another horrific blast, the Klingon fighter pilots
launched their drones and tried to get out of range. Without dash packs,
they lacked the speed to stay their destruction. Another wave of
directed subspace crashed into the Klingon force, destroying the entire
fighter squadron and doing more shield damage to the attacking force.
"Keep waving at them, ensign." The station commander said, as the
Klingon carrier began turning away from the battle.

The Dreadnaught and escort ships clawed their way towards the base on
sheer grit. By sheer luck and a blundered defense of the base, three
drones managed to hit the base; taking the shield down by half after
battery power was diverted to keep the shield up. The dreadnaught opened
fire on the base at a half-million miles, followed shortly by the AD5
doing the same. Thanks to the drone hits, the Dreadnaught was able to
score damage on the armor. A follow-up blast from the dreadnaught's
phasers had begun to strip the base of her weapons.

However, the Klingon force was not doing well at this time. The carrier
had exited the field entirely, the scout had taken minor internals, and
the other remaining ships had extremely weakened front shields.
Additionally, the PFs had detached from the Vudar force in order to
charge the dreadnaught. At ten thousand miles, six overloaded ion
cannons and as many phasers punched through a paper-thin front shield on
the dreadnaught to nearly cripple her.

Stunned by the blast, the Dreadnaught turned away while the escort ships
gave chase to the PFs. The much smaller Vudar units used battery power
to protect theier structures as they banked impossibly sharp to get out
of the arc of the station's guns. In the mean time, the Vudar cruisers
closed in for the kill against their wounded foe.

Again, at knife-fighting range, the Klingon dreadnaught obsorbed
impossible damage as ten overloaded beams of pure electrons plowed into
a relatively fresh dreadnaught shield. The beams tore great chunks from
the large structer, until the engines blew and momentarily created a new
star in space. Being so close, all three of the Vudar cruisers
completely lost their front shields to the blast.

With the death of the Klingon flagship and the retreat of the carrier
and the scout, the Klingon escorts attempted to rout. The Vudar PFs were
int he process of disengaing from the immediate area of the battle in
order to reload their weapons, but decided to re-engage once they
realized the situation. The Vudar cruisers turned to the large escort
and began to give chase. They reached extreme tractor range and fired
their fresh phasers into the rear of the retreating war cruiser. She
suffered moderate damage, but more importantly had lost the use of maybe
half of her engines.

The Ion storm dissipated as the base stopped dumping power into
subspace. With the clearing of the communication channels, the Jordan
transmitted to the nearly-crippled escort, "Heave to and prepare to be
boarded!" The response was a surrender and request for repatriation. The
small escort was allowed to finish retreating unmolested.

Final tally is:
Vudar - No internal damage to mobile units. Moderate damage to the base
(but it wasn't crippled.)
Klingon - Destroyed C8, captured (and crippled) AD5. No internals on the
D5V. No lasting damage (but some internals) on the FWE and F5S.

Vudar Win

--Matt
____________________________________________________
Dramatic SFB campaign chatter list
http://sfbdrama.mattnet.org
SFBdrama@lists.mattnet.org
http://lists.mattnet.org/listinfo.cgi/sfbdrama-mattnet.org

____________________________________________________
Dramatic SFB campaign chatter list
http://sfbdrama.mattnet.org
SFBdrama@lists.mattnet.org
http://lists.mattnet.org/listinfo.cgi/sfbdrama-mattnet.org
