<p class="MsoNormal">"Klingons Inbound!" the sub-chief
manning the sensors at Base Station <br>
#2410 said suddenly. "Warp footprints say it's a
dreadnaught, a pair of <br>
war cruisers, and a pair of destroyers."<br>
<br>
"Report it to the Jordan." The commander replied while
turning to the <br>
Comms officer. "Begin sounding recall for personell
from the cruisers <br>
on-board. Warm up the Storm Generators."<br>
<br>
It took nearly 15 minutes to get everyone in their
proper place. Not <br>
bad, for the attacking force was detected not but 80
light-seconds out. <br>
The Klingons sure took their time in the approach. By
the time the Vudar <br>
knew the Klingon's escorts were an AD5 and an FWE, the
cruisers Jordan, <br>
Tirzah, and Philistia had warmed up thier weapons and
they were <br>
beginning to pull warp 1.8. The Klingons were
beginning to launch their <br>
fighter squadron and spread out for the attack plan.<br>
<br>
"Prepare for a close-range engagement, captain." The
commander of the <br>
base station had command of the group while the force
was in the <br>
immediate environs of the station. Technically the
Jordan warranted a <br>
Rear-Admiral's slot, since she was the largest ship
class the Vudar <br>
could produce. However, with the guns mounted on the
station it was the <br>
best doctrine to coordinate through her. However,
defense of Vudar <br>
stations tend to very quickly devolve into independant
commands because <br>
of everyone's dependence on subspace and the Vudar's
abilities to remove <br>
subspace from the equation.<br>
<br>
"Overload Ion Cannons." The captain of the Jordan
commanded the group. <br>
"Launch PFs. Make course for a close-approach with the
base in <br>
one-point-five minutes heading three-five-zero. And
stay out of arc of <br>
the directional waves."<br>
<br>
The PFs disconnected from their linkages with a sharp
release that <br>
vibrated through the fabric of the ships. A total of
four fast patrol <br>
ships disengaged from the Tirzah and Philistia. The
Vudar force made for <br>
a sharp turn to starboard that took them closer to the
base and circled <br>
around again in order to arrive at the base the same
time that the <br>
Klingons were projected to open fire.<br>
<br>
The area began churning with random ionic discharges
as the base began <br>
dumping power into the subspace matrix. Very quickly,
communication was <br>
useless and firing solutions fuzzed out as a beauty of
an ion storm <br>
gripped the area. The Klingon attempts to lock onto
the station were <br>
further hampered by it's sudden release of fire
control and ramping up <br>
of personal ECM. The Vudar ships kept their fire
control but also <br>
attempted to further the woes of the Klingon fire
control computers. The <br>
Klingon force pushed past 1.6 million miles from the
base with the scout <br>
and carrier in the rear and the fighters in the
middle.<br>
<br>
"Turn on the Vudar Tourist Association. Full Power."
The station <br>
commander said with a smile. The facing Ion Storm
Generator emitted a <br>
deep pulse of energy that caused the ion storm to
align itself into a <br>
short series of harmonic frequencies. The power built
very quickly and <br>
then began to broaden out in a 60-degree arc that
bracketed the Klingon <br>
force very nicely. When it smashed into the entire
Klingon fleet, half <br>
of the fighters were crippled and everyone's shields
were coruscent with <br>
radiant light. Shortly thereafter, another of the
base's systems came <br>
into view. Sensing another horrific blast, the Klingon
fighter pilots <br>
launched their drones and tried to get out of range.
Without dash packs, <br>
they lacked the speed to stay their destruction.
Another wave of <br>
directed subspace crashed into the Klingon force,
destroying the entire <br>
fighter squadron and doing more shield damage to the
attacking force. <br>
"Keep waving at them, ensign." The station commander
said, as the <br>
Klingon carrier began turning away from the battle.<br>
<br>
The Dreadnaught and escort ships clawed their way
towards the base on <br>
sheer grit. By sheer luck and a blundered defense of
the base, three <br>
drones managed to hit the base; taking the shield down
by half after <br>
battery power was diverted to keep the shield up. The
dreadnaught opened <br>
fire on the base at a half-million miles, followed
shortly by the AD5 <br>
doing the same. Thanks to the drone hits, the
Dreadnaught was able to <br>
score damage on the armor. A follow-up blast from the
dreadnaught's <br>
phasers had begun to strip the base of her weapons.<br>
<br>
However, the Klingon force was not doing well at this
time. The carrier <br>
had exited the field entirely, the scout had taken
minor internals, and <br>
the other remaining ships had extremely weakened front
shields. <br>
Additionally, the PFs had detached from the Vudar
force in order to <br>
charge the dreadnaught. At ten thousand miles, six
overloaded ion <br>
cannons and as many phasers punched through a
paper-thin front shield on <br>
the dreadnaught to nearly cripple her.<br>
<br>
Stunned by the blast, the Dreadnaught turned away
while the escort ships <br>
gave chase to the PFs. The much smaller Vudar units
used battery power <br>
to protect theier structures as they banked impossibly
sharp to get out <br>
of the arc of the station's guns. In the mean time,
the Vudar cruisers <br>
closed in for the kill against their wounded foe.<br>
<br>
Again, at knife-fighting range, the Klingon
dreadnaught obsorbed <br>
impossible damage as ten overloaded beams of pure
electrons plowed into <br>
a relatively fresh dreadnaught shield. The beams tore
great chunks from <br>
the large structer, until the engines blew and
momentarily created a new <br>
star in space. Being so close, all three of the Vudar
cruisers <br>
completely lost their front shields to the blast.<br>
<br>
With the death of the Klingon flagship and the retreat
of the carrier <br>
and the scout, the Klingon escorts attempted to rout.
The Vudar PFs were <br>
int he process of disengaing from the immediate area
of the battle in <br>
order to reload their weapons, but decided to
re-engage once they <br>
realized the situation. The Vudar cruisers turned to
the large escort <br>
and began to give chase. They reached extreme tractor
range and fired <br>
their fresh phasers into the rear of the retreating
war cruiser. She <br>
suffered moderate damage, but more importantly had
lost the use of maybe <br>
half of her engines.<br>
<br>
The Ion storm dissipated as the base stopped dumping
power into <br>
subspace. With the clearing of the communication
channels, the Jordan <br>
transmitted to the nearly-crippled escort, "Heave to
and prepare to be <br>
boarded!" The response was a surrender and request for
repatriation. The <br>
small escort was allowed to finish retreating
unmolested.<br>
<br>
Final tally is:<br>
Vudar - No internal damage to mobile units. Moderate
damage to the base <br>
(but it wasn't crippled.)<br>
Klingon - Destroyed C8, captured (and crippled) AD5.
No internals on the <br>
D5V. No lasting damage (but some internals) on the FWE
and F5S.<br>
<br>
