<p>That was a reference to a situation in public areas (hotels,
airports, etc) where a specific person is announced over a PA
system to "Please answer the courtesy phone." Upon lifting the
receiver they are connected with the operator or receptionist, who
either connects them with the person wishing to speak with them or
delivers a message for that person.<br>
</p>
<p>Wikipedia has <a moz-do-not-send="true"
href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courtesy_telephone">an
article about them</a>. I threw it in there as a humorous way of
calling out those specific people.</p>
